Experience sustainability and comfort at the Hotel City Krone. With renewable energies, regional products and environmentally friendly initiatives, we are committed to a green future.
At the Hotel City Krone in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance, sustainability is not just a word, but an integral part of our philosophy. We are proud to implement a variety of measures to minimise our ecological footprint while ensuring the highest level of comfort for our guests. Here are some of our key initiatives:
We generate sustainable heat and electricity with three combined heat and power plants (CHP). This technology enables us to use resources efficiently and contributes significantly to reducing our CO₂ emissions.
We have photovoltaic and solar thermal systems on our roof that supply us with clean, renewable energy. In this way, we make an important contribution to conserving fossil resources.
We rely on numerous regional suppliers to support the local economy and shorten transport routes. This enables us to offer fresh, high-quality products.
We largely avoid plastic in our breakfast menu and use reusable materials. We have also banned disposable cups from our hotel.
Our guests have the option of opting out of daily room cleaning. This saves water, cleaning agents and energy. We return the favour with a drink per person and cancelled cleaning.
We have replaced disposable items such as flip-flops with recycled flip-flops made from used PET bottles. We offer these for sale.
All of our lighting has been converted to LED lamps, which significantly reduces energy consumption and creates a pleasant atmosphere at the same time.
With the Echt Bodensee Card, our guests can use public transport on the northern shore of Lake Constance free of charge. This promotes sustainable mobility and reduces the burden on the environment.
In our souvenir display case, we offer a selection of regional products that our guests can take home as souvenirs.
As a sustainable company, we have achieved the DEHOGA environmental check at Gold level and are proud to carry the "ECHTnachhaltig" certificate of the German Lake Constance Tourism Association.
For us, sustainability in the hotel industry means promoting environmentally friendly practices while at the same time valuing our employees and offering them long-term jobs with excellent conditions.

Regional production is close to the Knoblauchs' hearts. Ever since Hubert Knoblauch took over his parents' business in Friedrichshafen in 1990, his motto has been clear: "Fresh and flavourful thanks to short distances." Together with his wife Angelika, he delivers fruit and eggs every day within a radius of around ten kilometres. "That means unbeatable freshness and regionality," explains the farmer proudly.
The diverse range includes crunchy apples and pears as well as fruity plums, cherries, peaches, nectarines and strawberries. "When growing fruit, we attach particular importance to very flavoursome, ripe fruit. For example, we grow strawberries and apples, etc. We grow varieties that are very popular with consumers and that wholesalers don't have in their range," reveals Hubert Knoblauch. The couple also attach great importance to the optimal storage of apples and pears on their own farm. The best refrigeration technology and many different storage rooms ensure that apples of outstanding quality can be delivered all year round. The Knoblauchs also like to process the fresh fruit into fine fruit brandies in their own distillery.
Eggs with flavour and a great yolk colour
Hubert and Angelika Knoblauch have also continued to keep chickens. The barn eggs - with a covered run - belong on every breakfast table. "We attach particular importance to fresh eggs with a beautiful yellow yolk colour, as our hens are only fed the highest quality feed, mainly with raw materials from the region or Baden-Württemberg. We don't use cheap components, regardless of whether we can compete with cheap prices or not." In the feed, green meal (dried young grass), wheat and maize are the basis for a good flavour and a great yolk colour "just as the Swabians want it."

The hotel industry has undergone significant change in recent years. While the focus used to be mainly on luxury and comfort, sustainability is now increasingly taking centre stage. But what does sustainability mean in the hotel industry and how can hotels become more environmentally friendly?
Energy efficiency
One of the biggest levers for sustainable development in hotels is energy efficiency. By using modern technologies such as LED lighting, motion detectors and intelligent heating and cooling systems, hotels can significantly reduce their energy consumption. Solar energy and other renewable energy sources also offer promising opportunities to reduce the ecological footprint.
Water management
Water is a precious resource and hotels can do a lot to minimise their water consumption. By installing water-saving shower heads and toilets, collecting and reusing rainwater and using modern technologies to monitor and optimise water consumption, hotels can make a significant contribution to water conservation.
Waste reduction
Another important aspect of sustainability is waste reduction. Hotels can avoid waste by eliminating disposable products, using recyclable materials and implementing an efficient waste sorting system. Food waste can be significantly reduced through careful planning, the use of regional and seasonal products and the composting of organic waste.
Sustainable procurement
Sustainability starts with procurement. Hotels should make sure to use products from fair and ecological production. This includes certified cleaning products, sustainable bed linen and furniture as well as food from local and organic producers. By supporting regional suppliers, hotels not only support the local economy, but also reduce CO₂ emissions caused by long transport routes.
Environmental awareness of guests
Many guests now attach great importance to sustainable travel. Hotels can engage them through transparent communication and targeted measures such as environmentally friendly activities, information about local conservation projects and the opportunity to participate in sustainability initiatives. By actively involving guests in the hotel's sustainable practices, hotels can further increase awareness and commitment to environmental protection.
Conclusion
The hotel industry faces the challenge of balancing guest comfort and satisfaction with sustainable practices. However, there are numerous ways in which hotels can reduce their environmental footprint while creating attractive and environmentally conscious offerings. By utilising innovative technologies, sustainable sourcing and engaging guests in their sustainability initiatives, hotels can take a leading role in promoting a greener future.
